My children are starting Religious School next Sunday, or also referred to as Sunday School, Hebrew School. They will be like most children I suppose; After a few weeks they'll complain, "do I have to go?" My gentle answer is and will be , "yes", as my parents explained to me calmly and theirs before and so on...................... The tradition continues! School for the kids and a nice bagel breakfast at the local bagel shop for dad while the children play and learn.
I am smiling as I am writing this, as I remember my own dad waiting for me at 12noon when classes were over, and I knew a group of dads went to have bagels and coffee, and now it is my turn! I'll come back with onion and coffee breath just like most dads did when I was a kid!
I loved going to Sunday school, and really never complained; I enjoyed learning about Abraham all the way to modern Judaism and obviously I still do, but now I can study and have the bagel too!
Why are my children excited for Sunday School? Easy Answer: I am enthusiastic about it, and it rubs off.
I am so proud to pass the torch now, as my dad did, his father to him, etc. . My daughter and my son have made me a proud papa, and both understand what it really means to them and to me;Growth in their Jewish Spirituality is just beginning, and also will be reinforced!
Just think, we'll be learning together!
