Torah Thoughts -Shemot - Mama Knows Best!!

Shemot - Mama Knows Best!!

January 9/10, 2015   Tevot 18/19,5775

2:1
A man went from the house of Levi and he took a daughter of Levi.
  2
The women conceived and gave birth to a son. She saw that he was good and she hid him for three months.
3  She could not hide him any longer, so she took for him a wicker basket and smeared it with clay and pitch; she placed the child into it and placed it among the reeds at the bank of the River.    4   His sister stationed herself at a distance to know what would be done with him.   5    Pharaoh’s daughter went down to bathe by the River and her maidens walked along the River. She saw the basket among the reeds and she sent her maidservant and she took it.
She opened it and saw him, the child, and behold! a youth was crying. She took pity on him and said, "This is one of the Hebrew boys."
 7
His sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and summon for you a wet nurse from the Hebrew women, who will nurse the boy for you?"
8 The daughter of Pharaoh said, "Go." The girl went and summoned the boy's mother.   9  Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this boy and nurse him for me, and I will give you pay." So the woman took the boy and nursed him.   10  The boy grew up and she brought him to the daughter of Pharaoh and he was a son to her. She called his name Moshe, as she said, "For I drew him from the water."  This is the beginning of the story of Moses, born to Jewish Parents.
Two of the most important people in anyone's life are his /her parents.  Our parents have an ever-lasting effect and impact, even in a subconscious manner, and at times we never realize the full impact!   A Jewish mother is considered the creator, guide & guardian of a Jewish home.   To establish a Jewish home is to make and develop a new link in the chain of existence & tradition.   The loving task at hand of raising and instilling the values of the Torah so they may grow up to be responsible Jewish adults falls upon the woman of the home, and G-d has given this GREAT and AWESOME task primarily to the Mother.
The Torah and the lessons are ideally taught by the father, where the fundamentals are put into practice by the mother.   Obviously both parents play a part in the religious teaching, be they theoretical or practical, but the child’s religious life is greatly dependent in his/her early stages on the mother’s teachings.
Jochebed (Mose’s Birth Mother), may be seen as a hero and praised for her maternal instincts, as she put HER son in a wicker basket to float down the Nile.  The rest is HISTORY!!!!!!

As ‘they’ say, Mother knows best!
